WHEAT VARIETIES

PROTIVA

The variety Protiva was developed by Wheat Research Center, BARI released in 1993 for commercial cultivation. It is semi-dwarf like Kanchan with good tillering habit. The leaves are semi-erect and deep green in color. The flag leaf is semi-erect and narrow. Regarding varietal identity, the plant type is very similar to Kanchan, but it has fewer hairs in the upper culm node than in the Kanchan. Grains are white and large with thousand- grain weight ranges from 42 to 48g. The duration in the field ranges from 105-110 days.

The variety is resistant to leaf rust and tolerant to Bipolaris leaf blight having some degree of tolerance to heat stress. Under normal growing environment, the yield ranges from 3800-4500 kg/ha. Although, the yielding ability of this variety is at per Kanchan in normal planting but it can out yield Kanchan both in early and late planting. The variety is suitable for cultivation throughout the country except in saline areas with salinity level more than 6 mmhos.

KANCHAN

It is a widely adapted popular wheat variety developed by Wheat Research Center, BARI. The variety was developed through hybridization between two Indian varieties UP 262 and C 306 and a series of selection and yield testing process over locations and years. The line was proved be superior to the existing varieties in respect to yield, disease resistance and agronomic performance and released as variety with popular name "Kanchan" in 1983 for commercial cultivation.

It is semi-dwarf in height having very good tillering habit. The variety has prostrate growth habit at seedling stage. Leaves are semi-erect and deep green in color. The flag leaf is semi-erect and narrow. The plant type is very similar to Protiva, but it has numerous hairs in the upper culm node than in Protiva. At seedling stage, the plants showed prostrate growth habit, which is different from other varieties. The glaucosity in the spike, culm and flag leaf sheath is strong. Grains are white and large with thousand- grain weight of 48-52g. The duration in the field ranges from 106-112days.

The variety has become susceptible to leaf rust and Bipolaris leaf blight although it has some degree of tolerance to heat stress. Under normal growing environment, the yield ranges from 3800-4500 kg/ha although the yielding ability of this variety has been reduced to a great extent due to its susceptibility to foliar diseases. The variety should be gradually replaced by new varieties like Shatabdi, Sourav and Gourab.

This is a semi-dwarf variety with good tillering ability. The leaves are broad, recurved and deep green in color. It is resistant to lodging due to its thick and strong stem. The flag leaf is broad and recurved. Strong waxiness is present in spike and culm, while it is very strong in flag leaf sheath. The lower glume beak is long (about 5-10mm) and lower glume shoulder shape is slightly slopping .

The total duration in the field is 102-110 days. The grains are white and medium with 1000-grain weight of 40-45g. The variety is resistant to leaf rust and tolerant to Bipolaris leaf blight diseases. The variety also has some degree of tolerance to heat stress. Under normal environmental condition, the variety yields 3500-4500 kg/ha. The yield is higher (5-10%) than Kanchan both in optimum planting and late planting. It can also be grown successfully throughout the country except in saline areas with salinity level more than 6 mmhos.

BARI GAM-20 (GOURAB)

It is a high yielding variety of wheat developed by Wheat Research Center, BARI and released in 1998. Due to its superior agronomic and yield performance the line was released as commercial variety with the popular name "GOURAB" in 1998

It is a semi-dwarf variety. The leaves are narrow, semi-erect and deep green in color. Flag leaves are narrow, erect and twisted. Lower glume beak is short, which is long. The total duration in the field ranges from 102-108 days. The grains are white and large with 1000-grain weight of 40-48g. Water logging at seedling stage may cause yellowing of the plants temporarily. The variety is resistant to leaf rust and tolerant to Bipolaris leaf blight.

The variety has good level of tolerance to heat stress and is best suited under late planting. Under normal environmental condition, the variety yields 3500-4600 kg/ha. It can out-yield Kanchan by 5-10% in optimum planting and by 10-20% in case of late planting. The variety is suitable for growing both in optimum and late planting conditions and throughout the country except in saline areas with salinity level more than 6 mmhos.

BARI GAM-21 (SHATABDI)

It is the latest wheat variety in Bangladesh. Due to its superior agronomic performance and yield potential, the line was approved and released as commercial variety in 2000 with the popular name "SHATABDI".

It is semi-dwarf with good tillering ability. The leaves are broad, recurved and light green in color. Flag leaves are also broad and droopy. The plants are light green in color with very weak glaucosity in the spike, culm and flag leaf sheath. Lower glume beak is long and the lower glume shoulder shape is elevated.

The total life duration ranges from 105-110 days and the vegetative phase (66-75 days) is longer than any other variety so far released in our country. The grains are white and large with 1000-grain ranges from of 46-48g. The variety is resistant to leaf rust and highly tolerant to Bipolaris leaf blight. The variety has good level of tolerance to heat stress and is best suited both under optimum and late planting for rice-wheat cropping system. Under normal environmental condition, the variety yields 3600-5000 kg/ha. It can out-yield Kanchan both in optimum planting and late planting and can also be grown successfully throughout the country including saline areas with salinity level around 6 mmhos.

BARI GAM-22 (Sufi)

This is a high yielding variety of wheat developed by Wheat Research Center, BARI and approved as variety by the National Seed Board in 2005.

The total life duration ranges from 100-110 days and the vegetative phase ranges from 58-62 days. The grains are white and relatively smaller in size (36-46g. The variety is resistant to leaf rust and tolerant to Bipolaris leaf blight. The variety has good level of tolerance to heat stress and is best suited both under optimum and late planting for rice-wheat cropping system. Under normal environmental condition, the variety yields 3600-4800 kg/ha. It yields at per Kanchan in optimum planting and 10-20% higher than Kanchan in late planting. It can compensate yield loss in late planting through higher number of grains per spike. The variety can also be grown successfully throughout the country including saline areas with salinity level around 6 mmhos.

The grain is medium hard with protein content around 11%. This variety has high bread making quality due to its stronger gluten and extensible elasticity. The quality of protein is at per wheat, which is being imported for bread making purpose with high price.

The plant is dark green in color with medium number of hairs in the upper culm node. The leaves are broad, recurved and dark green in color. The glaucosity in the spike is weak, and medium in flag leaf sheath and culm. Lower glume beak is medium in length (5-6mm) with few spicule. The lower glume shoulder shape is elevated.
