Gammosis
Disease of Jackfruit Symptom of gummosis: Jackfruit
is the national fruit of Bangladesh. Now days this indigenous heritage of Bangladesh
is suffering from a fatal disease called gummosis. Gummosis is nothing but exudation
from the trunk and braches of jackfruit plant which looks like blackish brown
gum. Initially the infected area of trunk become sunken and eventually the bark
cracks. The disease is visible in all plant irrespective of age, however the older
plants show much prominent symptom. The infected plant parts may be rotten during
the rainy season that culminates low fruit yield, inferior timber quality and
may some time cause death of the plant. Control measure: Better
control measure of Jackfruit gummosis is yet to be developed. However, the infected
plant parts should be scooped out with the help of sharp knife so that the healthy
woody part is visible. The scooped area should be smeared with Bordeaux paste.
To prepare Bordeaux paste dissolve 100 gm of lime in small amount of water. Similarly,
dissolve 100 gm of cupper sulphate in separate continuer with small water. Keep
them overnight and then mix them together to make a paste. This paste is to be
used to smear the scooped area of the plant. Coaltar may also be used instead
of Bordeaux paste to combated gummosis disease of Jackfruit.
